Posts: 280 04/20/2009 20:03	Tags : None Here is one that was kind of tricky. Customer called and asked if we could tow a motorcycle. I said yes we do them all the time. Then he told me what was wrong with the bike. He parked it to go in a store and locked the steering. When he came out the key cylinder messed up and he couldnt unlock the bike. Then he tells me its a Honda Gold Wing (a big bike). I usuly use the wrecker to tow bikes because it is easyer but with the problem on this one i thought i should use the rollback, so I grabbed the bike dolly and headded out. When i got to the bike and looked at it I found I could not use the dolly because of the pharing on the front would not alow for straps. So I called one of my drivers out to help me. We put a soft strap in the front tire and hooked to the winch cable. I got on the bike and held the front brake so the tire would lock and slide. Then John (my driver i called out) run the winch slowly to pull the bike on the truck. It actually worked very well. We then strapped it down and went to the dealer for repair. Thankfully when I got to the dealer, four mechanics came out and unloaded the bike for me I would like some other opinions on how to deal with a bike in this situation.

Posts: 268 04/21/2009 02:33	Well Done. Did a Harley myself where it was seized by the courts with the steering locked. The owner was there with the key but was being uncooperative and refused to hand the keys over. So i strapped the front wheel and winched it up the same. Had the use of a forklift at the other end to make life easier. Cheers

Posts: 297 04/21/2009 12:30	Looks good on the deck. I always use a autoloader with just the front wheel atachment, then the rear tire sits way over where a normal car tire would be. sounds a bit weird but it works good for impounds/repos. These tows always happen at night so I don't have any good pics of it.

Posts: 640 04/21/2009 19:52	I just encountered a similar situation last Friday. Got called by local PD to a SUV vs. Motorcycle crash. The bike was badly damaged in the front, the forks were bent back with the front tire jammed into the frame and slightly turned. Rear tire locked up because it was stuck in gear. It would not go into neutral. This bike would not roll at all. I brought the condor, but it was useless for our situation as it turned out. The Condor was already "plan B", because our first thought is to sling them from a wrecker boom. My wrecker was down for paintwork. I will post a seperate thread once the PD clears the hold from the vehicles, as the crash is still under investigation by detectives. (The cycle's operator did not make it unfortunately) Basically we did about the same as you. We used a roundsling through the rear wheel (loading backwards due to the angle it was laying), and with one of us holding it upright, just winched it up the bed. Secured the bike with ratchet straps.

Posts: 455 04/22/2009 02:42 Oklahoma	it looks to me that you handled it the best way that it could be handled. the only other 2 options that i can think of is either use a slide hammer to rip the lock cylinder out to unlock it or use a jack under the front end and set the front wheel down on a small furniture dolly to help maneuver it around but both are risky and last resorts. Henry ford invented the automobile but when something went wrong, he called Ernest Holmes to tow them in.
