Posts: 1 01/21/2009 22:48	Tags : wrecker tow truck, wrecekr vs tow trucker Hello, I have some questions about the proper name for tow trucks/wreckers. My friend is from the south and she says that they are called wreckers and I am from the north and we call them tow trucks. Is there any difference? Do they refer to them differently in certain parts of the country? What do they call them in Canada? What is the more commonly used of the two? and are they interchangable? I always though wreckers where for large towing. Thank you.

That's right it doesn't matter what the public calls the equipment and it doesn't matter what the Tow Operator calls the Equipment. What does matter is the money the equipment earns. Call it anything you want as long as the equipment is earning a living for the company and operator.

Posts: 3653 01/23/2009 09:08 WreckMaster #071094 Kentucky	Wrecker.... would have more of a boom and recovery capabilities Tow truck would suggest it is more for towing only... a truck with only an underlift on it a carrier to me is more of a car transporter... ya know the ones that haul cars to the dealers.. A roll back would be more of what we use while a flatbed would be like a delivery truck where the bed does not move. That is just my .02 worth Now if you want to talk wire rope or cable... try recovering a car with your tv set

Last time I was in Texas, there was nothing in the phonebook under towing, it was all under wrecker service. If I were in a phonebook with no listings under towing, I would make sure to get a listing under towing as well as wrecker service.

Posts: 578 01/24/2009 05:38 Kansas	I think that it is definitely regional, but until recently I always wanted to distance myself from the term "wrecker".... to me the term wrecker produces the visual image of a scrufty looking guy, barely any teeth, greasy coveralls, crazy hair, driving an old sling truck. that is the way it was, especially here local when i was growing up....so to differentiate ourselves i always tried to change that to a positive connotation, we are trained towing and recovery operators, we use flatbed rollbacks to tow and recover cars, we use heavy duty tow trucks and recovery units for semi's. learning the history about Ernest Holmes calling them wreckers and listening to Wes Wilburn, kind of changed my perception of the term wrecker. however technology has changed and industries and people evolve so maybe it isn't so bad to be a towing and recovery operator after all... at the end of the day it means the same thing, for the most part we are overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated, but we love what we do!

It's all a regional thing. I refer to mine as a tow truck, but sometimes people want clarification. Then it's easier to say wrecker or flatbed (or rollback) but we don't say ( tilt bed, slide bed or tilt tray).
