Steven,
I used 2x4 last year here in Truckee. Am at the base of Donner Pass. My whole area is the Sierra Nevada mountain range. And the 2x4 did fine, but I did chain both the fronts and the rears a few days. I can tell you I spent a lot of time putting on and taking off chains. This area has a few neighborhoods that the streets are actually higher than the mountain passe's, and actually much steeper. I did just recently purchase a 4x4 C-5500 wrecker because I finally was able to secure a storage lot here in Truckee. And felt that I didn't want to delay our response time because of time chain installation. And quite frankly some of the grades on these side streets makes it much safer to have traction to all four wheels. Plus with the addition of rotation I have to be able to get to each and every call, no matter where it's at. And here, we simply need the 4x4 capabilities to do that effectively. As far as problems with the 4x4 system. I haven't heard of any. And as a matter of fact a few company's in and around Tahoe have C-5500 and have nothing but praise for there trucks.
As you can see am double chained on my rears in these picture's .
Just another winter day running around the Sierra's. And just one set of chains, they did a more adequate job. Hope this helps, and if I can answer any other questions just give me a call. Dennis

I have also talked to some truckers that are very enthusiastic about the Onspot chain systems. And that might be the very thing for your new wrecker. Which
is a awesome truck and very capable unit. (Congrats!) But I really felt I needed the C-5500 4x4 in this particular market, to perform at the level of
professionalism, that I expect for Running Bear. As you know you never get to make a second first impression. And the two biggest things up here for law
enforcement is a rapid response time and of course proficient performance on scene. Having this particular section of the I-80 corridor and surrounding
mountain roads law enforcement is highly conciseness about secondary accidents. And do not want any delay arriving on scene.
Dennis p.s. Hope to see at the Saviour Dinner in Baltimore..... |

I talked to a driver up here that operates a c-5500 4x4 with a 21' bed & side puller.... other than fuel milage ( 8.8 mpg has been his best so far ) he
loves his , he didnt mention any problems so far , wearing parts like brakes and such had been the same as their 2wd version of the truck

Jared, have you tried other tires besides the Goodyears? We have a 2007 5500 4x4 with a Holmes 552 and the Goodyears just don't seem to get a good bite in
snow. Like you , we get a foot of snow over night and it's plowed and melted by noon. The only time we need chains is off road or steep driveways that
haven't been plowed. I'm looking for something different when the Goodyears wear out.

No we havent tried other tires. It only has 13,000 miles on it. There is still some tread left even though they are almost square

I have 13000 on mine too. The tread is 50% and the fronts are not cupping . I was thinking of maybe using my groover on the center of the tresd to open it up a
little.

If you guys are Interested, I just mounted a set of 245/70/19.5 Sumitomo st918 drives and 718 steers for a local lumber co. who has all 5500 4x4's, and the
drivers say the rib tire in the front and the drive in the rear was better in the mucky job sites the the 6 goodyears they had prior

Now a 25,950 GVW, air ride/air brake chassis, crew cab w/ 4X4 and maybe a 84"CA Century 3212 wrecker- That would be a ride that everybody that sees snow
would love to have! Have a good day! Matt
