My 2000 Chevy 6500 has been running fine. All of a sudden I am getting a stuttering in 6th and 7th gear. That is the best way to explain it. I am driving
along and it seems like I am about to run out of fuel. It kinda hesitates. It only does it in the higher rpm range, say 1800 to 2200. It only does it about
a second and then resumes driving fine. When it is doing it, it won't go about 68mph. It is very intermittent. One day it is fine, the next it drives
like crap.
It also really takes a dive with a load especially hills. I was going up a bridge today and slow to 40 mph, downshifting 3 gears when I normally only go down one. In the lower gears it is fine, climbing to 2200 to 2400 rpm fine. It only does it in 6th and 7th mainly.
I have changed the fuel filter, added Lucas fuel treatment to two full tanks and haven't had any improvement. It has a new air filter and when they replaced the clutch last month, they checked the transmission out and it is fine. There is what appears to be a fuel/water seperator under the driver's door, but I only get fuel out of it when I open the drain.
Is this a system of a fuel pump going bad? Has anyone had this problem with their Caterpillar's? I am leaning towards fuel pump or maybe a bad injector, but if it was an injector, wouldn't it idle bad? It idles fine and setting the high idle during winching it runs fine.
