Have had a few issues recently with customers saying it is illegal for us to photocopy their driver licenses, id's, and proof of ownership(pink slip's,
registration's and finance contracts) when they are claiming property or their car. Is this true? We are in California if that makes a difference.

I've heard the same thing, but no one has ever old me what law (section) it violates.

I heard that to when I was in Maryland.something about privacy act laws.never seen this law in black in white.

If you find out what the code section is Dustin, post it for us. I've never heard of that here in Georgia.
I've been copying those docs for 25 years, though. It demonstrates my 'due diligence' in releasing someone's property. And from the "What it's worth" department, Every time I buy a vehicle I have to give up my ID and registration (if it's a trade) for the dealer to copy.
I have not failed, I have found 10,000 ways that won't work.

i dont really know about the legality,but if a issue ever comes up on the release of a vehicle it sure helps to explain who we release a vehicle to--a picture
id sure helps if the local cops need info later in a case and we have been questioned more lately than i can ever remember on who we released a vehicle to--
we try to get at least 2 forms of id on release of certain vehicle tows--driver liscense & registration-- i do make copies and staple onto my tow ticket--

If in doubt, call the DMV -- laws vary by state, with at least one making it entirely illegal and others requiring the posting of a privacy statement.+

I have never had anyone question it as of yet
