Lead | ||
|
I've heard of many problems with the C5500; but has anyone here heard of RUST building up in the tanks? Spoke with Jan Brothers and he said its happened
before.....just want to hear if others are having this problem as well. Gathering info for the boss so he can go back to Chevy. Thanks.

what kind of responses are guys getting from the dealership with regard to the "contaminants" in the c5500 fuel tanks? we just spent a fortune to get
our 2004 c5500 out and running again. they said that water was either in the fuel that we got from the service station or that water somehow managed to get
into the filler neck via a bad cap. additionally, the fuel sensor that is supposed to indicate water in the tanks "doesn't work well" according
to a GM representative. I'd like to hear all kinds feedback please.

I have to agree with the guys on the tanks being plastic, you say you step on the tank to get in the truck daily C5500 tanks are inside the frame rail they are not a step tank, I did hear once they were going to offer a step tank on the 4 wheel drive version? Are you sure this is a factory tank? Chris Chitwood Chris Chitwood

junk in the tank | #7 | ||

i think that the water (ice, snow) collects on the top of the tank and get sucked into the tanks. as we all know, water has a way of getting into whatever it
wants. the rubber seal on the top of the (plastic tank, in this case) contracts and expands as weather conditions change. additionally, i believe the
continuous suction that is created through use draws the fuel from the rear tank to the front tank and through the fuel filter. this continuous contacting and
suction placed on the seal overtime (or hours of use) compromises its integrity. Once the water gets in, it is drawn through the system and into the filter
and wallah! GM will deny warranty because now there is water in the tanks. They are obviously being louder in their water-in-tank argument than they are in
their we-have- a- bad-seal-design-on-the-tank argument.
i've spoken to a few guys and it seems like there is an increase in tank junk during winter months. my problem is that GM will refuse to honor their warranty if contaminats are found, ALTHOUGH, the problem very well maybe the defective GM seal that is allowing water into the tanks in the first place. GM has also recommended that the nipple on the bottom of the fuel filter be loosened to allow water to be release, if there is any, and retightened. this a problem because the tranny dip stick is right in the way and very difficult to manuever your hand to retighten. in fact, if the little nipple isn't aligned properly (the treads strip) GM will not warranty the filter at a cost of $100. Additionally, the sensor indicating water/junk in the tank doesn't work and if that doesn't work and extensive damage occures as a result of a defective part, why won't GM honor/acknowlege the problem? I thought politics were a washington thing. Now i'm learning it's rampant at GM. Sorry if my post is rambling, my '04 c5500 just got out of the dealership a few days ago and last night my '07 c5500's engine light went on and we took it to the dealership today and the fuel filter had to be changed (as it wouldn't go over 30 mph). the truck only has 8650 miles. so yes, i'm pissed.

Now that is slick. 4X4 5500....
So far I have had zero problems with trash in my tanks on my '07 5500 with 78K miles on it. I just wish I could have got my truck with those step tanks.

C5500 tank problems are rare. I have sold a large amount of C5500's over the years and I haven't had any issues other than an occasional sending
unit stop working. I would suggest contacting 1 800 GM CARES if the dealership you are dealing with doesn't help you with resolving the situation. As for
the fuel tanks that are inside the rail, they are definitely plastic. The saddle tanks are available but not widely used. There might have been a problem with
the supplier that shipped the saddle tank and it could be defective if you are experiencing rust. I will check with my shop foreman to see if there is anything
I can do to help you with the problem.

My 2005 C5500 RV had a problem with the engine light coming on and not being able to go over 2500 RPM without the transmission down shifting to a lower
gear. The Dealer said I had the fuel filter replaced, done, but now I am getting only 8 MPG instead of the normal 11,
also I have no pickup, have to put the peddle all the way to the floor to get it started.. I ran two tanks (60 gallons
each) through since the filter change. Do I need to change the filter again?
OR.......?

only use a OEM filter with the durmax, alot of aftermarket ones just arnt holding up, and yes you will need tochang it alot do to the very fine microne
filtering it does it gets pluged fast, but its cheaper then injectores. GM did have a big problem with metal tanks, they were not primed before painting them
and have alot of flaking/rusting problems. They also have alot of sending unit problems. i hated working on the fuel tanks do to all the problems they had with
them. when i replaced a sending unit on a plastic tank i would clean the top of the tank and then seal it with a tube of sealer making chanels for the water to
run off the tank and out of the way.
