Posts: 1260 01/27/2013 4:28 AM Web Administrator Tech Guru	ya, this class-action settlement really isn't a very big win for merchants. A "group" of retailers gets $6.05 billion from the settlement. You get a surcharge to use your credit card from some merchants in some area's (won’t affect California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma and Texas state laws, American Express cards, and debit cards) Capped at 4% so even if the fee's from the card company is really high you can only get 4% from the customer. surcharge can vary based on the type of credit card (rewards card etc) Merchants will have to do some more things to do this, like post a sign at their storefront announcing the extra fee. They’ll also have to disclose the fee at the checkout counter and on the receipt. some stores already factor fees into their pricing so this may lead to a double dip for some. A final ruling on this case will be made later this year. this is only preliminary. In the end card company's and banks still get to charge whatever for the fee's they what. Trying to figure out merchant's credit card agreement's still hard and a very few retailers would be able to surcharge under the settlement as the details are really fine print. In steps Square! so ya, what a mess...

And I like round numbers. For example, a $65. tow paid by credit card is $60. if paid in cash. To me, if you are up front about charging a handling fee, it can be a public relations nightmare. If you are using Square, you are paying only $2.75 per hundred for swiped transactions. Not bad. thtdon

Posts: 125 01/27/2013 7:17 PM Directory Listing Pending	You have a point , but how often do you get told up front their paying with a card and if you take a lot of cards and you add that all up at the end of the year thats a lot of money lost that could be in you pocket. Doesnt evryone here always say we dont get pais enuff for what we do and yet we let it go to a credit card company.

Posts: 1260 01/30/2013 4:36 PM Web Administrator Tech Guru	The card fees have all ways been a cost of doing business, so you build in those costs when you sale. no matter who pays it, the banks and CC companys get the money. They sued Visa and MasterCard for collaborating to set these fees artificially high. now you have the surcharge that only some can take advantage. profit? you still have fee's... Very few business's are likely to take advantage of this new surcharge being that the fee's are already baked in to the prices. consumers prefer higher prices and no fees. The risk of backlash for big retail is greater than back 7 years ago when this lawsuit started. but on the other side there is cash-handling costs too. bank fees, losses resulting from theft counterfeiting and cash logistics (armored transportation, processing, etc) for big retail and business's this side is not really talked about. http://business.time.com/2013/01/25/a-4-surcharge-for-using-a-credit-card-legal-but-not-likely/ -Chris Parrish-

Who in the towing business needs a car service to haul your deposit to the bank? Credit card fees are not built into my prices. How is that fair to a cash customer when you have set tow rates and they are posted, and the police have a copy of your rate sheet. So your charging a cash customer the same as a credit card customer? Don't know how much you paid in credit card fees over the years, but I have paid about 30 grand or so. We are going to use Paypal for our merchant services thru our smartphones to get the lowered fixed rate. We plan on charging the fee, when we get all the paypal readers set up in the phones. When the economy takes a dive like it has, and your business slows down, you need to watch every dollar. Now that we have smartphones in our business and are able to receive text messages, we are also going to do away with our backup text pagers. We switched from Sprint-Nextel to another carrier and are saving $125.00 per month on service cost alone, and that is with all of the features in play on the iphones. Cutting the pager service saves $1300.00 per year. Charging the surcharge fee should save hundreds per month. Do the math... it all adds up. Its how small business stays in business.

Of course it is fair to cash paying customers. You have many expenses that may apply to one customer but not to another. There is no way you can separate expenses charged on each and every call. EVERY expense I have is built into my rates whether that expense is used on a particular call or not. It is built in because I must have that expense in the event that whatever that expense paid for is needed. In reality, cash paying customers are becoming fewer and fewer as my years pass and plastic is becoming more and more. 20 years ago, I would not have ever considered accepting cc but now it is a necessity and in Texas, it is required to accept a credit card, debit card or electronic check in additon to cash on all non-consent jobs. As far as police having a copy of your rate sheet, the cc fees should be built into your rates so it should not be an issue. If you operate in an area that regulates the rates, then those fees SHOULD have been included in a rate study that establishedt that rate. If you are seriously concerned about cash paying customers, I know of no reasons preventing you from offering a cash discount as many business have for many years. The cc fees are built into their prices and cash paying customers recieve a discount. This method covers your cost of accepting credit cards and still rewards the cash paying customer. Ron Burnes
