So, it's 9:00 p.m. on Saturday night. The phone rings, and a man asks how much to tow his F-350 diesel 4X4 in town. I quote him, and advise that I have a truck available right now, and his Ford will be towed on a flatbed. He then asks if I know a cheaper towing service. Remaing calm, I tell him that I only know MY rates, and there are other numbers in the phone book to try.
Is this happening to you? My city is app. 100,000 people, and I have competition. I'm not the only choice to be sure.
After we hung up, I was bothered by the conversation. A number of things went through my head. Flag down someone with a pickup truck and a skipping rope to pull your diesel (was my first thought). Do you pull into a gas station and ask if the fuel is cheaper elsewhere (was my second)
Maybe he is out of touch with todays' pricing. I'm proud to give a quote over the phone, but to ask if I know a "Cheap Charlie" is out of line. I find that some of the older folks are out of touch, as the "last time" it was $15.00 to tow a the family Valiant. I also understand being broke, but my services cost something to perform.
My buddy has a sign in his shop the reads " We screw the other guy, and pass the savings on to you"
