"Barrell" Roll |
Lead | ||
|
Sometime back in another topic,I recall a topic maybe by Steve @ Highpoint about using a couple of Steel Barrells full of water under a Semi
Trailer when it is rolled over to "Catch" it and keep it from hitting the ground as hard and possibly turning over. Recently I was in a situation
with a overturned Tractor-Trailer and I didnt have room to get a truck behind it to lower it down as it was uprighted ("Catch-Truck"). Also there was
nothing behind it to rig off of with a line to use to help lower it down. If all this isnt enough the roadway was slanted downward in the direction of the
upright,Further causing concern about it coming on over as it was uprighted. And if all this wasnt enough, All the eyes within 50 miles were on us during this
recovery. My question is, Can this method still be used today and is it something that should be used. At the accident scene I thought of all the possible
options to control the upright and could not come up with anything other than Prayer. I am in a rural area and my equipment consist of a 40 ton hydraulic,20
ton hydraulic,2 -750 Holmes. I, realize this may be a old school way of controlling this situation and you guys with the Rotators and other big equipment may
not have this problem. But in my area I have all the equipment that the market will support. I am just looking for another tool for the box. Let me know your
thoughts about this.

robert we have been using barrels for over 40 years and dropped countless units loaded and empty on barrels. on loaded units we use 55 gal. drums. you only
need 2 1 on the trailer and 1 on the tractor. leave the top caps half way open so the air eases out. once the unit hits the barrels its gonna stop keep
winching it and it will crush the drums and come down real slow. just line up the drums carefully so the bottom of the tires hit the tops of the drums. it
works every time....old school baby its the best......good luck.....bob.........if you need to talk to me or my brother steve you can call our office at
201-864-3700......thanks.....bob

Bob,
Thanks for the reply, And expect a call as I love picking a brain LOL. I am 45 years old and was taught the business by my father-in-law,He was "Old School" all the way. He was from back in the time you had to do the job with what you had and that was no were near what we have available to us today. Even with todays modern equipment "Old School" ways still have a place in this industry. I will have a working 750 in the fleet until the end of my time. As we all know the only piece of equipment greater than a 750 is an 850 HAHAHA!!! I am going to try this "Barrell Roll" in my storage yard one day so I can use it in public if ever in another situation that I dont have room for a Control Truck. I liked the ideal when I saw the post and thought about it the day I was on the recovery, But not being sure how it worked I did not wont to try it and possibly embarress my self. Robert
Also Bob do you have any photos of this procedure being used?? |

robert you are definitly right about old school ways and im a perfect example of that the way i was taught. im 56 years old and iv been doing this since i
could walk.unfortunatly we sold all the 750s we had and our 850 for the big hydralics but im looking for another one to have.now we are building a monster 80
ton plus b&b rotater we are getting in 2 weeks. ill get my brother steve to post some pics of the barrel roll. we should have some pics in our albums.
believe me they work beautiful (old school). you can also use the 15 gallon thinner drums that we save from our body shop. when you use the smaller drums you
need to put 4 drums on it. 2 on the trailer and 2 on the tractor. just leave the caps opened up half way for the air to escape.....if you need anything else
just call buddy....stat safe.......bob

I"m looking forward to any pictures...
I'm not understanding what you mean 1/2 open.. (are you talking about the screw in cap's.. and rethreading them 1/2 way.. or some how opening only 1/2 of the sealed cap on the drum??) (I have also seen posted here where some people put sacks' of sand under the inside dual of the tires that are closer to the ground.. to help slow things down..). and another sugesiton I've heard of dismounted tires from a truck.. (double or triple stacked) where the roll over is going to land.. but so far of all the idea's I've heard the barrels seam to be the best answer.. stay safe Rod |

Bob,
Thanks for the reply, I cant wait to see the photos of the Barrell Roll So I can have another tool in the box. I along with several thousand other people have been following Kongs build. I cant wait to see it finished and I know the HighPoint crew feels the same. I would guess after Kong is finished there will be no more "Barrell Rolls" for you guys as I am sure Kong will be able to upright a tractor-trailer by itself with all of the winches and everything else about Kong. It is truly going to be a one of a kind piece of equipment. Robert |

Here are a few shots of the famous "Highpoint Jersey Barrel Roll"......
Thisunit was very heavy and was loaded with a fragil glass products... So we used 3 barrels on it... This way? It had to be pulled all the way down... This is like lying a baby in a cradle...

We have up-righted units with sheets of glass, china, marble, granite you name it? They come over, touch down on the barrels and depending on how heavy they are
or how many barrels we use? They will either drop slowly crushing the barrels as they fall? Or we have to winch them down. If you want them to land a bit
harder then we use one barrel, Then they will land harder but without a bounce... They work second to none.. Everytime.... Thanks... Steve
This will give you an idea how long we have been using this system... ![]()
At one time? This was one of best kept guarded secrets....lol... Be safe

The barrels don't make a sheet of ice either? We have never filled them with water or anything else ever! No need to.. The barrels I get when I purchase
anti freeze, motor oil, hydraulic oil, thinners and ATF. So I always have a supply of cans. That I pay nothing for... But I do get $$$ when I through them in
with my scrape iron.... I never have to worry about cutting them or wearing them out? Or blowing out one? They work for me? Professionalism can be measured by
how fast a company can get on scene... upright a unit.. and get it out of there... And we have done that with the best of them for over 80 years... The
barrels don't have to be filled with air (No hoses to hook up and dis-connect and no waiting till there full) once the unit is up-righted? It's hooked
up and towed away... As it's leaving one of us pick up the crushed can throws it in the back of one of our trucks... I'll take my barrels any day...
Be safe... Steve

The "Jersey Barrel Role" has always cracked me up! It's ingenious and cheap but still gets the job done. I want to go out back and smash some
cans just to try it (never did it before).
Steve, who was the one to first try this in your company? I imagine that you guys are premier members of the "Can crushers anonymous" club..... Hello, my name is Bob....and I crush cans... Hey it gets the job
done and you don't have to worry about screwing one up! I'd like to see some of those old pics down at the museum, the method is part of the American
towing history.
Chuckie, those new bags are pretty neat. How much time does it take to set them up? Paul was telling me they use a leaf blower to inflate & maintain? I wanted to go to the training class last weekend and I imagine that Scooby had some there but I couldn't get out. I guess they are great as long as someone doesn't cut the wrong straps?
Thanks,
Ed |

Thanks Ed... Actually years ago some people use to use old car & truck tires to drop trucks on? But when units that were loaded with tall loads and when
trucks began to get heavier? The need for a better system that slowed the units better became apparent.. 40 or 50 years ago you needed all your trucksto do the
up-right and couldn't spare a truck to use as a catch truck. So my uncle Dominic Avella devised the barrel catch which worked and continues to work
flawlessly... Simply? Nothing has proven to work better? Why buy the cow when you can drink the milk for free? Be safe... Steve
