- A small group of ORG/PTAO members have lobbied a Private Members Public Bill, Bill 87;The Towing industry Act 2008, seeking "self-regulation" on behalf of the towing industry in Ontario.
- The ORG/PTAO has a membership of approximately 300.
- Canada411.ca lists 2500+ towing services in Ontario. That's 12% representation at best! Not exactly representative of the industry at large is it ?
- If passed into law Bill 87 would give a group of up to 12 towers and 8 outside interests, the legislated authority to impose their brand of regulation on the towing industry in Ontario.
- June 4, 2008 Bill 87 was quietly tabled and passed First Reading in the Ontario Legislature.
- June 5, 2008 a memo was issued by the ORG/PTAO Executive Director to this small group of members, accompanied by a draft of the regulations that Bill 87 would empower.
- June 19, 2008 Bill 87 had been scheduled for Second Reading!! Good thing that didn't happen!
-June 25, 2008 I happened to look at the PTAO website and saw the press release from June 5, 2008 announcing Bill 87. I checked the "interesting links" but found no link to Bill 87. I had to look it up on the Gov't website.
- June 26, 2008 First thing in the AM I called and left message for 2 PTAO directors to call me. No one called.
- June 26, 2008 Started telephone campaign and learned that no one knew about Bill 87! I'm still at it!
- July 11, 2008 ORG/PTAO announce a series of 2 hour "Town Hall" meetings across Ontario in July, and 1 at the Tow Show in September. A moot point really. The Bill is before the Legislature now and only they have any say in the matter, and if Second Reading had passed in June, Bill 87 would have been whipped, and a majority Liberal Gov't would have made it law!
- July 21, 2008 Attende Ottawa meeting and asked to see the Regulations that Bill 87 would empower. I was told by the Executive Director and the President that NO regulations existed because there was no law.
-I presented the Executive Director with a copy of his memo of June 5, 2008 and asked to see the Regulations referred to in the memo. He insisted again that there were NO Regulations!!!
- They want us to support Bill 87 blind with no knowledge of exactly what we might be empowering against us. Something stinks!!!!
- The Ontario Federation of Independent Towers is working to spread information to the industry at large about Bill 87, and to gather support in our efforts to Stop Bill 87!
