Truck swap to Atlantic City... |
Lead | ||
|
I had to pick up an International straight truck for one of customers... Tow it down to Atlantic City, NJ and swapt it out and bring back aanother
International straight truck that had a blown motor... Dam... I almost forgot how hot a B Model Mack could be on a hot summer day? But the old girl reminded
me real fast what I have been missing....lol... Thanks.. Steve

I think Id deal with the heat just to get in a peice of history like the B.
That unit is why I love to do what I do. Nice little ride to the Atl!!!!!!!!

Thanks,

I really don't think it's a matter of being used to A/C or being spoiled? I think it's we just can't take the heat as well any more? The truck
didn't get any hotter? We just get older and can't hold up to the elements as good as we did when we were younger & stronger... I really don't
know how I did it years ago? Sitting on the Cross Bronx Expressway in traffic on 100 degree days all day long? Now? You will need to send Life Flight and Air
lift me out! Just another hint we are getting older... "The Older I Get? The Better I was" Be safe and stay coooool...

Yeah I know Rod... One: It's a bit tight under the hood with the late model motor,And I don't like the unit on the roof.... Two: Being a B-model? It
only has a 750GPH flow radiator.. The Maxidynes Motors require a 1100 GPH radiator of which I don't have? I adapted a bigger fan and with the shroud it
will run cool enough...The A/C would just be to much I think to cool it down... On long pulls on hills with something in tow? I sometimes have to drop a gear
or two even though it's not required? Just to let the turbo not work as hard and let it cool down.... it already has the short water pump on it.. So there
is not even room to thicken the core... It's pretty tight under that hood with the 300 motor.... I guess I can tuff it out... Traffic is the real killer...
If ya can keep moving? It's not so bad.... Be safe... Steve

I believe it looks to be a Home Made wrecker??

Yes it is home made... This truck was a Gin Pole truck with a fifth wheel out of Houston Texas.. We towed it in off the pike with a bad Aux trans... We
installed a used Aux. and he drove it home to Texas... They called a few weeks later to ask if we were interested in the truck. We paid $5,500.00 for it in
April of 1961. My uncle Dominic Avella drove it home and we built the boom here in our shop... We installed a brand new Brownlipe/Spice Aux trans. when it got
home.. The boom arches were trucked to Brooklyn, NY to be Cold Rolled so not to loose strength.. it is bolted and welded down to a sub-frame which is fish
plated to the double rail chassis... It's fish plated from the front springs back to the tailgate.. It has a Tulsa 45,000 lb. wide spool winch with 350
feet of 3/4 wire rope... The winch is run off the Main transmission.. It has a reversable PTO on the main box... with the Aux in neutral? It has 5 speeds in
and 5 speeds out... The winch is driven via a double idler shaft for reduction and strength.. And an Ortiz heavy duty tow bar... It uses HolmesScotch Blocks
which chain to the rear tailgate area.. We have been running this truck ever since... in 1980 we put a rebuilt 300 Maxidyne motor in it and a brand new rear
end housing with 4;62 ratio double reduction rear.. It was also painted at that time and still has that paint job today... The truck will run about 85 on the
road... It rides and handles great and is an extremely tight truck... It will lift and tow loaded tandem and tri axle dumpers and roll offs... Kinda light in
the front but it will do it non the less.... I have been from all over Canada to Key West Florida and as far as as Wisconsin in this truck... It's getting
near time for another overhaul... Guess I need to make time for another project soon..Thanks... Be safe... Steve
