Wouldn't it be great to know what the clubs are really planning to do about the rate problems ? and I don't mean tell us a bunch
of crap like they normally do. I really don't expect an answer from any rep on this.

Working on developing a round table summit. Stand by. Discussing the problem further within multiple topic is going nowhere so any some point I'm sure the
board will draw a line. We are not going to make it a B___h session, there has to be a light at the end of the tunnel. That could mean motor clubs become a
piece of our history within these forums. But then who wins, is winning even associated with motor clubs. Does the Club Win, Does the Customer Win, Does the
Tow Company Win, Does the Tow Operator/Driver Win? The solution won't magically appear overnight, when its been simmering for years. Concerns over fuel
prices have now brought that simmer to a boil. It's now like a pressure cooker, we're just waiting out the explosion. 2009 will be interesting......

I think it is going to happen before 2009.
After everybody starts paying $5.00 a gal for fuel and they start fiquring the cost of each job they do is at a loss , things will start happening real quick. Look what has happened in the last couple of months. From what I have been reading, there are a lot of clubs being dropped and a lot of calls not being taken. I have gone back and read everything on the motorclubs in the past and nowhere did I see people dropping motorclubs and not taking calls like I have in the last few months, on this big of a scale. I think what is happening is kind of like the day of the buffalo, they kinda just faded away. And it will be so with the motorclubs, the handwriting is on the wall. We will see which motor clubs can read and actually do something about it. It appears that a couple of clubs are trying to improve things for now. But what are they going to do in another 6 months when cost have skyrocketed again? I read somewhere that one of the things the mc will look at is the performace of a tower when considering raising their rates. I wonder if they really look into why the calls were turned down ? If you do calls at a loss you lose profit and look good in the eyes of the mc and have a good performance record and if you turn down calls because of little or no profit, you loose with the mc and you won't get higher rates because of low performance. Am I correct in this assumption ?

Best of luck Ron (P.). It is my contention that as long as the TRAA is dependent on motor club associate member annual dues, there won't be any serious
movement. What is the single largest problem in the industry affecting quality of life for towers? Motor clubs, this has been true for years. Who has been
persistently silent on the issue? TRAA. What the clubs do or don't do regarding fuel prices is their business decision/problem, but the fact that the
leadership of our national association doesn't see the clubs' continuing encroachment/monopolization of retail towing as an actionable problem, is just
shameful.
By the way, as long as Miller and Jerr-Dan continue to operate on business models that include increasing the number of tow trucks on the roads yearly, there isn't going to be much relief in sight. I talked to an auto lift salesman the other day. He told me that partially for liability reasons, most salesmen won't re-sell used auto lifts, THEY CUT THEM UP INSTEAD! Saves on liability but it also helps by not screwing the garage you just sold a new lift to by not putting someone else in business to compete against them! Good idea, eh? Ron (S.), I don't think they can/do have an action plan. For the most part they will continue to operate as they have for years. Cover what they can and tough luck on the rest. Their business model doesn't allow anything else. After all a motor club doesn't add any real value to the towing service. If people just called a local tower every time they needed a hook, the m/c's could dry up and blow away, and surprise, surprise, surprise, the cars would still get towed! Probably a whole lot faster and with friendlier (more contented) drivers in consistently well maintained tow trucks! I think all the club talk about increasing efficiency is just B.S. cover for their meddling in our relationship with our customers. Customer calls me on the phone with a request for service, because I "know the territory", I can get in my truck and go to the customer immediately and help them. It doesn't get much more efficient than that. How does some call taker in India entering (mis)information for a digital dispatch make for a more efficient system? Sorry for the rant. Maybe I should start a "What do motor clubs really add to the industry that actually makes them a plus rather than a negative for towers?" thread and see if I can upgrade my attitude.... Did I mention it was unseasonably warm here today? |

Who will be using motorclubs if the economy doesnt get back on its feet and noone is buying new cars with towing coverage? Who is going to spend xtra money on
things they know they may never need if people are just getting by? to the rich guy it doesnt matter how much things cost. The poor have nothing to lose. The
middle class people are the ones suffering and not spending and they are the ones who use the most motorclubs. Im not saying all motorclubs are bad. Im saying
I would sell my stock in motorclubs because things dont look good.

I have noticed one thing in reguards to the economy and motor clubs, More people are using them just because they can not afford the tow bill. Now dont get me
wrong I am not defending motor clubs one bitt, but alot of people are cutting corners to save money and when you get a card in the mail that say join --- for
just $25 a year that looks like a easy way out, exspecially if they own a s@#t box ( mainly cause they cant afford a new one ) and know it will break down. We
need to remember that right now more than ever people are hurting for money and cant afford the basics so they look for alteratives to take the pinch off of
them and motor clubs like AAA and Allstate and so on will stick around no matter what we think, just because they thrive on the customers who are looking for
the easy way out.
What I beleive is that we need to band together as an industry and go after the motor clubs to better our contracts and just keep the pressure on them to do so and dont back down. Sooner or later they will see that they will need to do something, lets just hope it is sooner rather than later |

our local AAA office had an ad in the paper here that had a cute girl that looked pissed off and a caption saying " if I knew a tow was going to cost me
200.00 I would have spent the 59.95 on AAA instead "
the thing that irritated me about that ad was the membership for 59.95 is a basic , I dont know anyone in our area on a light duty tow charging 200.00 for 5 miles ? as long as people especially those who dont have much money think it will cost a fortune to tow their car ( one they may not have the funds to properly repair ) they will always resort to a motor club in hopes ofsaving $$ |

Okay y'all, and "insiders view?"
I work for aaa and almost every time I show up , to people who have basic coverage, here it is three free tow miles, when I tell them there is only 3 miles free, you should see the looks on their faces. "WHAT?!!!!!!" I was told I have free towing for 10miles!!!!!!!!! I say no, and I'm sorry but I'll call dispatch and check. You know the answer, they have to pay or let the vehicle set. Now this is what happened to me and why I don't tow for aaa at the present , and at the rate of fuel going up maybe not again. I got called to a location locally to tow a car approximately 15 tow miles. Not a lot of profit , but enough. When the people found out they only had 3 miles of FREE towing you should have seen the cell phones go into action. Some one found a friend of a friends cousins twice removed ex-mother-in-laws son, just 1/4 mile down the street. You could see it from our location. So I loaded up, delivered, and cleared .50 cents. Yep call me what you want, but , when I got home I called the rep and said no more tows unless more $$$$$$$$$$. And you know the answer to that too. And I won't be towing for aaa until , well you know it don't get that cold DOWN THERE. So let aaa sell all the 59.95 basic memberships they want, the more the marrier. Oh yeah and I don't tow for the plus members either. Can't play favourites. |

Ron S.,
Clearly, the lack of information regarding motor club plans to survive in the current economic state is either a well orchestrated secret plan/conspiracy designed to keep us ignorant (and on our toes) OR, they have no idea what they are going to do. There are a few CEO's who are trying like hell to pull the wool over their boards of directors eyes so they can just keep their jobs, much less actually plan for the future. Don't forget the clubs are so busy trying to stab each other in the backs to get "more volume" they think that anything they do could be the "holy grail" to increase profits. Just imagine how effective a national advertising campaign would be that explained to people they don't have to sit waiting for a hook. There is someone sitting right around the corner who just wants to be paid a profitable rate. And guess what, the motorist can have that service for about $12 per year through their auto insurance company! That is something a national association of towers should have been doing long ago. |

That would be nice except most insurance companies contract through motor clubs now
