Dearest Motor Club:
In case you haven't noticed, our economy has weakened tremedously over the past few years. Mostly because of sky-rocketing fuels costs.
As I am having a tough time supporting my own family, I regret to inform you I can no longer support yours.

What they are really suggesting is that we SUBSIDIZE motor club service with our more profitable operations. That sentence hit the nail squarely on the head. I, for one, refuse to rob Peter to pay Paul. I now do very little motor club work and I screen each dispatch for profitability. To hell with their acceptance rate data, their trophies, so called awards and everything other smokescreen.

Our motor clubs forum was not as evolved when that trophy system was unveiled. That had to have been the dumbest thing I have ever seen in regards to motor
clubs. It was kinda like th statement "Badges we do need know Badges" seems the only ones that strived to live up to award program were the companies
that failed in the first three years. Professional Companies that had few issues in the past found themselves absorbed in a program that was much as the
greyhound chasing that darn rabbit. Many including the motor club lost sight of the true objective. Now if I am wrong speak up, in fact we need more provider
members speaking up as we muddle through to the real issues facing Motor Club Providers. Currently fuel costs are the focus, but rates were an issue prior to
the increases.

I wont speak for anyone else and this is just my opinion but I dont have any thing against any one motor club , that said when I sign a contract I dont expect
that contract to last the rest of my business days . I sign a contract with the thinking that that contract has a shelf life of one year . I have to renew my
insurance policy every year why not my rate s ? Keeping that in mind the cost of doing business goes UP (daily it seems this year ) yearly so in return the
rate of pay has to at least match those figures . When you speak to your regional manager and he tells you that you are one of the highest paid vendors in your
area already and you arent getting a raise , that makes it tough to want to do motorclub work any more . Like I said thats just my opinion thanks for giving
me a place to voice my opinion even if no one agrees .....

It seems like now a days, the statement "You are the highest paid vendor in your area" is all they say. I will say that I have been able to negoiate
rates for dead-head miles. And there are motor clubs doing this. It won't be long before the "free enroute miles" will also enclude 3 free
dead-head miles back.
I was told years ago from CCMC that I should ONLY have them listed as fill in work. When I went to negioate rates not to long ago.....she claimed that I wasn't taking enough calls and "didn't deserve" to have a rate increase. In that same call I realized that she didn't deserve the professional care and service from my company. I droped CCMC like a hot potato and never felt better and never had better revenue! Plus they still call me, on a full rate now. In the near future, it's gonna really suck to be a MC. I just honored them with my shi** customer award.

Ron,
Recently American Towman published an article containing a national rate survey for both retail & police rates. I realize that discussion of specific rates is against the forum rules, however could the members be allowed to comment on the survey's accuracy? (for those whom have seen it of course).. Please advise... |

I can also help with some statistics in those areas. I have data on those rates provided by over 3,000 companies in the past six months. I will try to get our
data together and online in July for everyone. We are involved in some other projects now that I don't want to put on hold but I may get a snapshot of the
data together and post it in the coming days.

The whole m/c club situation sucks and has to come to a head here. The reality is that they went to customers who otherwise would be yours and told YOU you
have to go through them and you can olny have x amount after their cut. Thats like racketeering or something. They blow smoke up your butt about being highest
paid or not deserving more money and want to play games. We cant win as long as we play their game. If we are sitting around on the verge of going under if
they dont give us a raise right now, whats the difference if you go out of business slowly by taking the calls verses just quiting?
All motor clubs are not to blame. Some pay good and work with the tower. Those are the ones we need to concentrate on. The ones that dont pay and play games need to be fired. Maybe they will get the hint or their business will suffer and they will be bought out or pushed out by a better club. I have seen all kinds of good ideas about not taking calls on the weekend when you pay somone or sit around for a couple calls that dont prodce anything, turning down calls you run at a loss, ect. Thats a good start. we need to change the game to suite our needs. If anyone wants to run the calls for $35 bucks they can be taken advantage of by the cheapskates and go cry in their beer about not having any money with the guy who thought he could get rich setting the buggy whip industry on fire. Now is not the time to wish customers will come around and pay more. We need to worry about #1 first. Its them or you. Remind these ___EDITED____ who took care of them as long as they could with good service and decent rates. Were not trying to fianance a new $500,000 yacht with a rate increase, were looking to keep the staus quo and maybe make a few bucks more ( we deserve anyway) to stay in business. Make them think about who they will turn to if you werent there. Now everybody get out there and grab this situation by the lapels and shake it up. Today is the first day of the rest of your life and you didnt picture your life when you started towing being broke and going out of business because someone could out maneuver you in a rate negotiation. EDITED: Reminder that this is a policy violation and also within an open forum.

Joseph I must commend you for trying, but here is my current problem with Motor Clubs. I have called your club once a week for two weeks then I e-mailed two
more seperate weeks and no one has ever called me back. I took a 58 mile tow in this time frame and that was the last. Please call me when I am gone and I
promise you will receive a return call. That is common business decency! Sunday when a Motor Club called I never even answered the phone, I am acting like
they are. And I must add RA is not the only Club that will not return a call and at least explain there side. Here is another side Coach-net gave me a raise on
4-15-08 so I will tow for them probly up to $5.50 a gallon. I will not run my trucks with a contract dated 01-14-07. Fuel at that time was what? Today it is
4.89 a gallon. Do you see our side, and remember it is not just the fuel cost everything is up. Last week I paid $1200. for repairs and right now the one truck
is getting a hose repaired on the wheellift. I will just let it sit if I cannot profit from using it. We are asking for help here!

I just received a call from ge motor club this morning, I invited him to send me a copy of the standard contract, I than crossed out their rates and put the
average witch is only a couple bucks more per haul but i told them we get full fair both ways. needless to say the gentleman didn't like that. He said that
they would pay so much after the first ten miles and i told him our NEW policy will not let a truck go out for any free miles!! They less than 15.00 for a goa.
he couldn't understand why i was set on my own prices. I ended the conversation by telling them i would give them a small courtesy because of volume but i
will not do anything for them for free and if they don't want to sign "my" contract they can still call me when noone will answer their call but
than they will pay the full rate. We'll see how well that goes over in corporate. I would also like to ad that i am from a very rural area and all the
towers are starting to follow suit so hopefully they will start to wake up when they can't get anyone to sign with them.

Joesph, take this as you may as I don't have a dog in the hunt other then the operation of this community. But I think I would leave off the "National
Fleet Fuel Program". Tow companies with larger fleets already have programs and fleet cards. Smaller tow companies aren't going to benefit cause they
often do better purchasing in bulk with their own small storage tanks. I'd say I just stepped into another post, perhaps I need to ask in a different forum
how Members purchase fuel. This may give you some better insight into the value of a "National Fleet Fuel Program". I think it sounds like doing a
burn out, you're not getting anyway and the tire is wearing out. But I admit I could be totally wrong and even off base. I'm sure a member will tell me
soon enough, I can't even believe we're going this far in an open forum.

Honestly we don't need a national fuel program what towers need is rate increases. And the BS the motor clubs keep feeding everyone is going to fuel the
fire raging now even more.I can tell you right now that the motor club rates are far below what i'm getting from commercial accounts (IE Auto Mechanical
Repair,Auto Body Shops and Small Fleets are paying.)As soon as the Motor Clubs wake up and realize they are just a customer the better off they will be.I can
tell you right now my regular commercial account DO NOT i repeat DO NOT Dictate what my rates will be.And this BS about diversifying our business why should we
costshift our rates to other customers or other avenues of our business to subsidize for the poor rates that motor clubs are offering. And the other BS comment
about cutting our cost well most of us have. Why don't the Corporate people of the Motor clubs cut their costs,How much are the presidents of these
Corporations making?I think this fuel crisis is about the best thing that could happen,Towers are finally starting to wake up.Motor Clubs this is a wake up
call.......YOU NEED US,We Don't really need you as a middleman cutting into our profits.Your all lucky to have the few companies still taking your
calls. When they are forced to close their doors because they are making zero profit,Where will the motor clubs be then?Hmmmmmm i wonder?
Sorry everyone its HOT here in NJ and i just needed to vent a little.

A while back Joseph suggested we find other sources of revenue. So I tried to get a milage raise only, from several Clubs including RA, in fact Joseph e-mailed
me that my rep would call me and never has. Anyway several clubs gave a raise and several never called back and so now I have more time to devote to my main
business and I buy less fuel and the tires will last longer and well Truck replacement, I don't even think about it. And guess what profits are up even
though I tow less. So really Joseph is right find something profitable and run your Tow Trucks at a profit. If Motor Clubs are not profitable then use your
valable time for something that does profit.

we dropped all motor clubs, no one here runs their calls (except for the local 3A contractor of course.) now they are forced to pay what we tell them. motor
clubs are simply not profitable for our industry so we fired them. good-riddance
