Just curious why... |

I have noticed over the years that some people call flatbeds...well, flatbeds and some people call
them rollbacks. Just curious what the majority of people call them.

My opinion, Flatbeds went out in the 80's as Rollbacks became a more excepted term. Then a few years ago started hearing carrier used more often as many
felt it provided a more professional image. I'm kinda leaning towards the Tilt Tray cause it confuses many on this side of the pond.

I call em carriers as I deal mostly in hauling loads. The terminology is more exact when you are dealing with items that are not "cars"....
The trailer I operate is a hydraulic step deck. Many brands, the one I use is a Landoll. Kaylin Siebert, Traileze and many others also make those as well as fixed, RGN, tiltbeds and yet other styles. Here the lumber delivery trucks use tiltbeds. They only tilt to unload the wood as the load slides off while the truck drives forward. RGN is a type of lowboy. Had problems in the past with people confusing lowboy and hydraulic step deck. This causes delays as well as hurt feelings......
Experience is something you normally get right after you need it.......

The term "flatbed" originated before the rollbacks existed. This was the term used for the dove tail flatbed car hauler with slide out ramps and insertable boom at the rear for using a sling. Rollbacks is the term most often used in my area. Carriers seems to be gaining ground. |

Ron - there are actually a few of them still running around here!!!
Ironically one is owned by an exotic car restoration/sales co. Talk about a contradiction in terms.......

Its just the same in Oz except we call them Tilttrays .......
Except a Tilt tray tips up and back in one motion via one ram.. Nowadays they are Tilt slide trays or Tilt slides of course one set of rams raises another pushes off.... Still they are both often refered to as Tiltrays until we talk all techno then we differentiate again.. Them dovetail thingys are often called Banana backs downunder.... |

The term rollback came from some of the early ones having rollers that was attached to bed that rolled along subframe. ATTACs was one of the brands.

Flatbeds around here. Some of the early trucks that were used by implement companies just tilted and didn't rollback. They had a tail that folded down
underneath that came up to make the bed long enough to reach the ground. Some of them had a pretty steep load angle.
